Machine Overview | Horizontal Directional Drills
We operate Vermeer 7×11 Series II and Vermeer 20×22 Series II Horizontal Directional Drills. We have a 500 gallon mud tank system that connects to the machine, feeding the drill rod a bentonite and water mixture. This mixture comes out of the drill head, coating our hole, allowing the drilled material to be “pushed” to the sides, and giving the product being pulled the ability to move more freely. It also creates a filter cake residue, much like tissue paper, surrounding the hole to maintain its integrity. 6 ft. – 10 ft. lengths of rod are added at a time, as our locating equipment guides our drill head exactly where we’d like to be. When the drill head gets to the end hole, a swivel is attached connecting the pipe with the drill head. The machine rod is pulled back one length at a time, along with the attached product, until it comes out of the ground. The product is then disconnected from the pipe, job cleanup ensues, and happy customers follow.
